Neurology

A neurologist is a specialty physician who is qualified in the diagnosis and medical management of diseases of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles).

Examples of central nervous system disorders include strokes, seizures/epilepsy, headaches/migraines, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.

Examples of peripheral nervous system disorders include carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves in the spine/radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy, shingles, myasthenia gravis and other muscle diseases.

Diagnostic testing by a neurologist may involve imaging studies (CT, MRI), brainwave monitoring (EEG), ultrasound of carotid arteries, peripheral nerve testing (NCS/EMG) and spinal tap/ lumbar puncture (LP).

Neurologists treat a variety of disorders with botulinum toxin (Botox, Myobloc) injection including cervical dystonia (e.g. torticollis), blepharospasm, headache, hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) and spasticity.

Like many neurologists, we also participate in research to determine the cause and better treatments for these disabling and sometimes fatal diseases.
